FineArtViews Painting Competition Award

I got a wonderful surprise today when I got home from a long day in both Courtenay and Campbell River with Bob running errands. I thought I would quickly check my email and received the message that my painting "Lisa" was selected as one of the FAV15% in the September FineArtViews Painting competition. This is means I might get featured in the informed collector section sometime in the coming months. I am trying to embed the award badge in this blog but I got a message that the gadget is broken right now. Hope they get that fixed soon. In any case, I feel very grateful to the jury and feel that I am finally making a bit of progress in getting more attention for my work. Artists ride the fence of ego vs. selflessness, trying to offer the world part of their gift and at the same time wanting some of the spotlight as a result. I am no different. I would like to be a well known, well regarded artist. I'm human! I also seriously hope that my small efforts bring a bit of light into our world...I am aware that in the long run none of this matters but while we're here it is nice to contribute in a positive way and be recognized.

  1. Congratulations Karen! This is a very well deserved recgonition. I'm really drawn to the hands in this painting, they're absolutely beautiful - well executed and very expressive and real in their positioning. Just, wow, I'm really amazed by them and the rest of the painting. Very well done!

  2. Congratulations! You certainly deserve recognition for your paintings. I love every one I've seen so far. Your painting of Lisa is amazing. Did you use a model for this one or picture? That robe is so beautifully textured that I can almost feel the folds in it and the material. I would guess it is velveteen. She has a Vermeer like quality to her as well.

When will the final judging be held? I just feel like you will win the entire show.

  4. Congrats, Karen. It is a stunning piece.

Thanks for the planes of the head info. Looks fantastic, and will probably get one at some point. Also looking at clay and body sculpting plaster to create drawing ref. for students. Currys seems to have all that...but not planes of the head.

  5. Congratulations, Karen! And I appreciate what you said about the tension between spotlight and creative passion. I would feel like there was something unfinished if I didn't seek an audience for my work, and sometimes wonder why I can't be content simply to create. It is good to know others feel the same way.

  7. Thank you so much everyone! This is a monthly competition and I haven't entered the one for October. There is a Best of Show award but I don't know yet who won that. There were over 700 entries in Sept. apparently. Healing Woman, yes, I used a model, a lovely woman who is also an artist. The robe belongs to me and is satin. I have a couple of other works of Lisa in this robe. I want to get back to the Samanda painting now and give it the same care and attention I gave Lisa since this seems to be the element of my work that is my strongest. Naturally it is the most time consuming! I am not all that fond, though, of hurrying through a piece or painting spontaneously...there are many who do that so much better than I do!

  8. Yes, It's a deserved award, but I prefer Nicole's portrait for its light. Great painting.

  10. Hi there "You"!... "In the long run doesn't matter"... Not so Karen! It matters to "You"... or you wouldn't keep offering it! It matters to us... or we couldn't keep responding to it... enjoying it and looking for our next dose of... what is ... delightfully Karen! In short ..."Art Matters"!!!

Congrats on the award! I predicted that. This is an outstanding piece of art by any standard... and who knows what gallery one might have to visit in the future to see it? It's good enough in my humble opinion... and matters... to "Me"!

    Good Painting!
    Warmest regards,
    Bruce
